There are so many things that we want in life and they’re not all material. The sick person wants healing, the estranged family member wants forgiveness, the poor person wants money and so on.
Many of the things we want are outside of our control, I want to talk about things that we can control.
Specifically our career, business, and income. You may think that you have no control over these areas, but you do. Where you are today is the total sum of all YOUR decisions. Maybe your job transferred you, you did not want to go but you did. You choose to take the job and move.
Maybe you were downsized, laid off or fired and you feel that was out of your control. That may be true but you made the initial decision to take the job in the first place. Ultimate responsibility for where you are is yours.
More money? More prestige? More freedom? Do you even know what you want? Most people want to earn more money but they are not willing to do what it takes to have it. That’s what I want to talk about. Why people don’t have more money and what is holding them back?
I believe that people often proclaim that they have everything they want, to convince themselves that it’s true. It’s my opinion that they understand a basic principle – to have more you must do more – and they are not willing.
I admit that I’ve been there “my needs are met and things are good.” When deep down I know that I need to get my show on the road and increase my income. Why do we do this?
Fear of the unknown is huge, the fear of loss is greater than the desire for gain. I have talked with many people that want to start a cleaning business. Fear is holding them back.
They can see the end result, they can see what they want, they cannot see how to get there without taking unthinkable risk and it doesn’t have to be that way.
When we are born, we have two basic fears: the fear of loud noises and the fear of falling. That’s it. So everything else that we fear is learned, and if we can learn, we can unlearn.
It’s a fact that most of the things we fear never happen, so stop being afraid of what could happen and go for what you want!
Faith Holds us Back
Say what? I thought that you had to have faith to accomplish big things. You do, but sometimes it can be used against you. It ends up being an excuse to stay in your comfort zone. People say things like:
If it’s God’s will it will happen. If God wants this then the door will open. The universe will direct me. God will make a way for this to happen.
I have no doubt that God and the universe play a significant role in our lives, the problem is we take it way too far. People decide that they do not need to do anything on their own. They ‘turn it over to God’ and expect a neatly wrapped package to arrive.
That’s like asking the ground for a harvest without planting the seeds. It’s fine to trust your higher power but you must make the effort to make it happen.
Lack of Clarity:
We must be crystal clear on what we want and why. If it’s vague or scattered our mind cannot zero in on the target. Without a clear target, our brain does not perceive what we want as important.
A crystal clear vision will activate your mind to make a way, even when you are not consciously thinking about it. You see what you believe, not the other way around. You need to believe it first for it to happen.
Believe in yourself and your abilities that God gave you. The bottom line is that if you don’t believe you can have something, your subconscious mind will not allow you to have it. More about this ahead.
Discouragement From Others:
Many times a well-meaning family member or friend will squash your ideas. Sometimes they have your best interest at heart and don’t want you to get hurt. Other times they are jealous and stuck in their own mess, why should they root for your success?
The best way to handle this is to smile and nod. It’s no use trying to change a persons mind and you will waste your energy trying. This is not to say that you shouldn’t heed advice. The wisest people consider input from many sources, then make the best decision they can.
This is huge for most everyone including myself. When we receive new information, our brain immediately links it with something that we are familiar with. This helps us understand and learn.
When the information is similar to a past failure or unpleasant events, our defense mechanisms spring into action.

Zig Ziglar once said: “Yesterday ended at midnight, today is a brand new day.” He also said that failure is an event, not a person. Wise words to help us remember to look forward, not behind us.
And the big one…Limiting Beliefs:
I saved the biggest one for last. Everything that we’ve already talked about is rolled into this one, along with some other defeating thoughts.
Bottom Line: We do not believe that we can have it.
Another one of my favorites, Tony Robbins, says that the only thing standing between you and what you want is the story you tell about why you cannot have it. Wow! I honestly believe that this statement alone makes up 90% of why we do not have what we want.
We need to retrain our mind and be aware of our negative self-talk. The person you talk to the most in a day? It’s YOU! What are you saying to yourself?
Stop telling yourself why you cannot have what you want. If you have been wanting to start a business you need to act now! How long have you been thinking about it? What if you had started back when you first thought of it? Where would you be today?
Time is running out, decide what you want today and go for it!
