When it comes to starting a cleaning business, it’s all about the timing, right? Everything needs to be neatly in order, a carefully mapped out plan. There should be no drama or personal situations holding you down, all lights green and smooth sailing ahead. Right?
Well not so much, but unfortunately, many people feel this way and delay starting a cleaning service because of it. Let’s look at some common reasons that people delay starting a cleaning business.
I Don’t Have Enough Time
There are 24 hours in every day, we all have the same amount and you will never get more. When statistics say that the average American spends 3 hours a day watching television, we can probably agree that most people do not maximize their time as well as they could.
The only way that you will ‘get more time’ is to figure out how you spend your time now. That would mean keeping a log of your average week. Write down everything you do and I mean everything.
You will be astounded at the amount of time that probably gets wasted. I admit that this is one of my weak spots and a challenge for me. After you see where you spend your time, decide what you can eliminate to focus on your business.
I Don’t Have Enough Money
Most people don’t, and it’s the number one reason the most businesses fail, lack of working capital. You can’t let this hold you back. You will need some money to register your business, buy insurance, supplies, equipment, and stationary, but it doesn’t have to break the bank.
When you are first getting started you do not need to purchase expensive equipment. You probably own many of the cleaning supplies you will need. I truly believe that a person can get up and running for less than $500.00 and if you really want it you will find a way to get it.
I Don’t Have Enough Experience
Do you know how to clean? Do you know how to treat people? That’s all I had going for me when I started at the age of 19. I had no degree other than the one I received from high school. I had no formal training other than my mom teaching me how to clean when I was young.
I knew that people wanted to be treated with respect and feel that they are getting their money’s worth when paying for a service. The rest came from trial and error. That was in 1988, we did not have the internet then. Today there is a WEALTH of information available to you online.
I Don’t Know Where To Start
If you’re reading this then you have already started! There is some great information on our website on how to start a cleaning business. There are many other great websites as well.
Do you know anyone that owns a business? It doesn’t have to be a cleaning business either. Most business owners are willing to help someone new get started. You can check with your local SCORE organization as well, SCORE is a group of retired or seasoned business owners that help new business owners get started.
Fear of the unknown is probably the biggest hurdle for people getting started. You need to ask yourself – what is the worst thing that could happen? The worst thing, in my opinion, is not failing, it’s not trying to begin with. If you don’t try, you will never know what could have been. It’s natural to be afraid, but take it one step at a time and you will be fine. Recognize from the beginning that things will not always go as planned. Be flexible and willing to change your plans as needed.
I bet you have seen this little cartoon before, if you haven’t, let it sink in. Because this is the reality for everyone.
The timing to start a business will never be perfect, as the old saying goes, a ship in port is safe, but that’s not what ships are for. Don’t let anything hold you back from your dreams. Don’t listen to anyone who says that you cannot do it. YOU CAN!
